THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR

By

Publisher: Scribner

One of the better titles in a series that presents stories of the states at the time of their making. Utah's story is one of the most dramatic, controversial and unusual. Virginia Sorenson, Utah born, knows the Mormon problem, appreciates both sides (as shown in her adult novels), and has carried over the underlying issues in what purports to be the diary of a ""gentile"" girl from the East who came West with her minister father to visit a crusading aunt. The stormy issues raised by her aunt's opposition to her knowing the ""triple family"" next door were met by Gerry's own determination to have her friends. While some of the boy-meets-girl aspects are a bit contrived to highlight both sides, the friendship between Gerry and Millie, of the Mormon family, is very well handled.
