A fast-moving tale of a trail trip in the Sierra Nevadas. Cress, a high school senior, has failed to make good enough grades for admission to college. She knows that her family is deeply disappointed in her and is troubled by the constant comparisons to her brilliant brother, Dennis. The latter suggests the trail trip as an opportunity for ss to find herself. The plan works; in the high mountains Cress overcomes her tendency to dramatize herself; she forms friendships, especially with Jon, a student at an agricultural collage and owner of a remarkable Palomino; she determines to return to school. There are interesting illustrations and a trail map by Hubert Buel on which the reader can follow the trip. A good story and character-uplift.
