The Educational Director of the Ethical Culture Schools in New York has given us a highly controversial book dealing with the place of religion in public education. Dr. Thayer is a bitter opponent of religious education on ""released time"" and of direct or indirect use of public funds for private and parochial schools, considering any such measures as a violation of the principle of separation of Church and Dr. Thayer denies that character-building is dependent upon religious faith; religious instruction in school would necessarily be sectarian and divisive Dr. Thayer asserts that the public school can and does give to the pupils the ethical and appreciation of spiritual values which is necessary to good citizenship in a Many educators and most church people will disagree with Dr. Thayer's and conclusions, but all would profit by reading this thought-provoding and considering his well shelles-
