A professional hunter, artist and adventurer, tells of a fifty year old safari in East Africa, where he was the first white man seen by the natives, and provides a good game hunting book. Here is the story of the search for elephants and their ivory, of the day by day setting up and working an African safari, of power rifles and expert shooting, of permanent and trail camps, of faraway and strange places. 14 months of travel, 6 months of actual hunting, 354 tusks taken from 180 head of elephant resulted in a 6,000 pound sterling profit. There are plenty of incidents of the journey, the individual native hunters and bearers, the unusual customs different villages offered; there are the lucky days and the bad days, and always the excitement of danger when confronted by their prey. This should be something to offer those who remember Du Chaillu and his African adventuring, and of definite interest to hunters and sportsmen.
