HAWAII: A Literary Chronicle by W. Storrs-Ed. Lee

HAWAII: A Literary Chronicle

The editor states that this is ""not an anthology in the ordinary sense,"" rather a chronicle with sequence and continuity reaching from the Polynesian migration through discovery to the current tourist boom and people mix. It is for ""the touring malihini,"" the at-home kamaaina...And indeed it tends to edify as much as to entertain, as explorers, whalers, diplomats, missionaries and others write of the natural features, the people and economy of the islands. There are a host of name authors--Michener, Padraic Colum, Tennyson, Richard Henry Dana, Melville, Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry Adams, Ray Stannard Baker, Jack London, Maugham, et al. Not an outright history, but a substantial subsidiary volume.
