THE YANKEES OF CONNECTICUT

The Green Mountains of Vermont (1955) was robust, neighborly state coverage, this again has its fascination for local -- and outside -- inhabitants. The settlement, the colony (whose western border in one grant stretched to the Pacific) and the state; the people who have settled, farmed, preached, gone to sea, taught, invented and manufactured, gone from the state to pioneer westward and those who are returning today to resettle within its borders -- this is part of the vigorous whole. The organization of the material is primarily by chapters on human occupations but it is all so well handled that the historical accent is not missing and the sum total is a storehouse of information of all kinds. Humor is a pleasant part of the author's easy style and Connecticut's development, its lore, its ways and traditions have an audience not limited by state boundaries.
