A picture of Middlebury, Vermont, during some fifty years, through the background of the author's great-great-grandparents' lives, as they created a new way of life. The revolution over, they used their unconscious genius and virtues to balance their frailties and inconsistencies, and met their problems with wits and endurance, energy, creative spirit, and a workable philosophy. He shows -- from sources -- the place of the family, society, business, politics, religion in the community; the methods and means of entertainment, education, medicine, reading and communication; and how they all contributed to the community's self-reliance, lack of complications, and made for the survival of the town and the people from the beginning to the heyday.
