THE MAN WHO LIVED FOR TOMORROW by Wade W. Oliver

THE MAN WHO LIVED FOR TOMORROW

Publisher: Dutton

A worthy book which never manages to rise above that status to become interesting reading. Biography of William Hallock Park, member of New York City Department of Health for 46 years. Begins with brief description of family, education, years abroad, as background for a technical, statistical, dry account of work with diphtheria, typhoid, dysentery, pasteurization, toxins and anti-toxins, etc. His contribution was constant use and improvement of the discoveries made by other men. The book lacks the human interest element that would make its subject come alive: there is almost no anecdotal material, no warmth of feeling. The book emerges as virtually a study of the rise of preventive medicine in public health.
