WRITING WITH CARE

A handbook for the serious practicing prose writer tackles two-hundred problems in the use of English, is based on the proposition that ""perfection in prose, with the good writer, means that choice and form of words which most faithfully renders the inner flow of argument or imagination, on which he sets the greatest store."" To show how this was achieved, Mr. Hildick presents revisions in sections of four mss. (revised by the authors), in the hope of improving reader-writing skills. The authors and works: Samuel Butler, The Way of All Flesh; Thomas Hardy, Tess of the Urbervilles; George Eliot, Middlemarch; Henry James, Daisy Miller. A thorough-going academic exercise.
