The odd couple of the title are Sandy the TV cougar, now a big game hunter's quarry, and 15-year-old rock star Paul Winters, on the lam from overprotective parents--and sure as one and one makes two, they'll be the salvation of each other. Gentle Sandy, washed up on TV after clawing a tormentor, has been transported to the island game preserve of rich ""Limpy"" McKinzie and scared into a fear of guns so he can pass as wild prey. But the boat that carries the gun-happy McKinzie also, inadvertently, brings runaway Paul to the island. And when Paul, hiding out, discovers that Sandy is really a pussycat set up for the kill, he feels ""big and strong and fiercely protective"" for the first time. With some help from Indian Joe Ironwood, who has his own past cop-out to atone for, Paul conceals Sandy from the increasingly frustrated McKinzie--who almost plunges to his death in the cougar's pursuit. Then it's gamekeeper Alec Frost who's hopping mad--but the wanted pair make a getaway by boat and Paul deposits Sandy on an uninhabited isle before confidently heading for home. From Paul's caricatured stage-parents onward, the story is overdrawn and all-too-obvious--with the result that even the boy and animal bond has no sympathetic hold.
