This is a difficult book to place, as its implications are definitely adult while I feel sure that there are a good many eight, nine, ten year olds who would get a good deal out of it -- and adolescents should be considered a permanent market. It is being introduced at this point simply because there is a distinct challenge in presenting the book to eights and nines. The entire poem is given by itself, and then the greater part of it is presented -- line by line -- with lovely full page pictures by Zhenya Gay in full color reproduction opposite each line of verse. There is an imaginative, sympathetic quality that makes this a very special gift item.
