I HEAR AMERICA SINGING

by Walt Whitman & illustrated by Robert Sabuda

Pub Date: Sept. 25th, 1991
ISBN: 0-399-21808-4
Publisher: Philomel

The great 19th-century poet's paean to workers, illustrated, line by line, in pleasing double spreads (they look like linoleum prints) in rich, slightly muted, beautifully balanced colors. Nicely reflecting the text, Sabuda's art celebrates the joy, diversity, and dignity of labor—with a bit of nostalgia thrown in. The entire poem is repeated on the last page. Attractive, but not essential where budgets are limited. (Poetry/Picture book. 5- 10)
