The All About series sustains a high quality of content and presentation. This is no exception. Anyone familiar with the range of books on rock gardening will find this author avoiding the pitfalls, presenting the subject in an objective, practical way, with analysis of procedures so that a gardener desiring to extend his knowledge to include rock gardening could use the text as a base. He starts in with selection of location, choice of type of rock garden, construction of wall, bank, slope or natural setting, preparation of subsoil and drainage, determination of type of soil needed for type of plant material, and then he makes a judicious selection of plants from excellent, detailed lists. The 27 line cuts and 60 half tones will supplement the text--but the text itself is explicit. Rock gardening is not presented as a lazy gardener's outlet. Full attention is paid to maintenance, constant weeding, grooming, pruning, trimming, thinning and so on. Feeding and watering, protection against infrequent insect posts, and briefly propagation, growing from seed, layering etc. are included. The descriptive lists are supplemented by cross reference lists of plants for special seasons, locations, desired effects. In its field, this is as good a book as we have seen.
