PORTUGUESE EXPLORERS

Portugal's role in the history of exploration gets full coverage in this short but well put together book for the early grades. It's mostly Prince Henry the Navigator's story but the climate of commercial and intellectual interest stimulating discovery at the Portuguese Court, as well as the other explorers sent out by Portuguese kings such as Vasco da Gama and Pedro Alvares Cabral, are adequately, briefly described together with a good short description of the various kinds of ships in use at the time. The two color illustrations are not Buehr at his best but complement what is essentially a supplementary book for the standard study units in exploration.
