Early graders who found The French Explorers in North America (1961, p. 501 ) a worthy addition to their supplementary readings in history, will want its companion volume describing famous Spanish expeditions. Beginning with Columbus, the first , Walter Buchr outlines the exciting travels of Cortes, his meeting with Montezuma and eventual subjugation the Aztecs, Balboa's discovery of the Pacific, Coronado's quest for the seven and the founding of the California missions. A slim volume, there is decided emphasis by way of superb illustrations-on the weapons and equipment of the day and on the Speniards' greed for gold and glory, a factor which prevented them from matching the territorial acquisitions of competing nations.
