KIRKUS REVIEW

Clearly presented basic economics, by the author of Ships and Life Afloat, (1953) Through the Locks (1954) and other competent non-fiction, outlines barter trade and the development of monetary systems from ancient times to the present. Interesting facts about barter and money substitutes show, as well, their inconveniences. With the invention of coins there are good examples of what Greek and Phoenician ones were worth. This, with a quick survey of extent barter systems sets the stage for an explanation of U. S. coin and paper systems as they developed from pioneer days.
