The emphasis her is on the defensive weapons, their development, manufacture and handling. Methods of hand-to-hand combat from antiquity through medieval times, and the body armors developed to withstand each innovation are discussed with clarity. A high point of the book is the chapter dealing with castle sieges and how these were repulsed and it is especially good in a book that is as easy to browse through as it is valuable to refer to. This would make a fine companion volume to Tunis' Weapons which emphasized their offensive use.
