KIRKUS REVIEW

Short stories, with the authenticity and sincerity of his novels, Love on the Dole, etc. For the most part, stories against the grim and unrelieved poverty of the Manchester and Salford poor, -- no jobs, for the men, hard work and child-bearing for the women. Several tales in lighter vein to relieve the monotony. A few somewhat slick tales with a certain commercial flavor. For comparative value of different types, read Any Cake, Bread or Pie and the title story. Good reading of the kind.
