TWO LOGS CROSSING

This has less tangible American background material but I thought it a better story than its predecessors, and a more original one. John Haskell, 16, has small thought of the responsibilities his father's death has put on his shoulders until he learns that his father had owed the judge a debt of $40. Then John sets to work to pull the shiftless household out of their rut. The friendship of the Judge -- and his faith in the lad, and the wise help of the Indian trapper make a man of him. The period is about 1930. The title refers to the advice of the Indian, -- always to use ""two logs crossing a stream"", so that one log wont betray him.
