MR. BUMPS AND HIS MONKEY

John Bumps was a British sailor who as second mate on The Old Lion sailed to the west coast of Africa. Here he found that remarkable little monkey whom he named Jasper. He is so companionable and intelligent, that Mr. Bumps decides to take him home but while passing through London, Jasper was stolen by Mr. Moss and eventually landed in the possession of a circus man who trained him for unusual acts. Jasper learned to talk and to act parts in skits, but way down deep he was desperately unhappy. One evening at the show he and Mr. Bumps meet again and eventually the sailor man takes him back to his forest where he belongs. The last few pages are heart-breaking for you feel that even here Jasper is not at home or comfortable with his kind. This has beautiful illustrations by Dorothy Lathrop and is a lovely looking book. We have not starred it but there will probably be many who will fall for it.
