THE MONK AND THE WORLD

This book provides us not so much with a history of four of the leading monastic orders as with an exposition of the contribution they have made to secular and religious life in the centuries immediately past and of their place in the world of today. He interprets Benedict as answering the cry of the world for peace, stability and brotherhood; Francis as setting himself against the materialism of his day and ours; Dominic as replying to the needs of the mind as well as the spirit, and Ignatius meeting the needs of our mobile population. The author is the co-editor of the monthly Frankfurter Hefte, a widely read periodical in the new Germany.
