In order to understand man's cultural development, one must understand the way he lives, and the road he has travelled. This is an examination of that road, a laudable intent. But unfortunately, anthropology has developed its own gobbledegook, and the book will mean little to any but fellow anthropologists and sociologists. It is diffusely organized, so much so that even the informed layman reads without illumination. Anthropology has had its epic and lyric writers, such as Franz Boas and Ruth Benedict, and can be made fascinating. But this book has succumbed to what seems a false scientific jargon and to an abstract overall view which seems lacking in perspicacity. Strictly limited.
