THE TREES WENT FORTH

A slim story of the Minnesota lumber district, which has a certain scenic, therapeutic value in its picture of a rough and robust life. Matt Bradley, forced to leave college by the death of his father, goes north to work as a clerk in a lumber camp. There he is exposed to an isolated if mettle-making world. Occasional character interest adds up to what is largely occupational experience:- Mrs. Keeler who has lived in the woods for twenty years to keep her husband from drinking; her sullen provocative daughter Cherry, who has had too much loneliness; and Sari, a Finnish girl, who teaches in the back country, and who gives Matt's future a goal and further impetus. Sincere, but one questions its popular appeal, in contrast to livelier books of its genre.
