THE WAVELESS PLAIN: An Italian Autobiography by Walter Starkie

THE WAVELESS PLAIN: An Italian Autobiography

By

Pub Date: Sept. 12th, 1938

Dr. Starkie has won a personal following through his Raggle-Taggle experiences, as he tramped through Spain with his fiddle. But his deepest roots are in Italy, and this is the result of twenty years' knowledge of and love for the country and people. He starts with the finale of the war, then goes on to his wanderings, a vagabond with gypsies and mummers. Art, music, landscape, people and politics play their part. He is avowedly an admirer of Mussolini, and there is an undercurrent of Fascist undertones. Lyrical, felicitous, charming at times, sentimental at others. Not for the travel library, but a book about a country and its spirit.
