This story of a Catholic missionary priest in the Philippines tells of the struggle of a fastidious man, primarily interested in books and a scholarly life, to learn to live with, understand, and finally, love people in spite of poverty, filth and disease that beset them. Here is a good character lesson for all of us, regardless of our church or non-church affiliations, for although this is a Catholic story, it avoids the supernatural quality of most of the Catholic books. The descriptions of the natural setting -- the colorful corals, gaudy flash, adventures in fishing boats and encounters with sharks add greatly to the interest of this readable story.
