KIRKUS REVIEW

Nothing that you could call literature, nominate for great writing, or suggest for a fiction prise -- but for laughing out loud at a smartpatter and bright chatter job -- our candidate. Yale man into Navy flier provides a really funny, (though you can't count on humor being all things to all people) tour of training -- from Dowd's unsuccessful efforts to join up to his eventual acceptance in Naval Aviation and his family's and friends' reception of his new status. Then on to Anacostia and a flight to the Admiral's book yard; home on leave: Corpus Christi and a wonderful madness in the Link trainer, instrument and radio training, Patrol bombers and miracles, insanity at Identice, sole flight in a P-boat, and finally -- being graduated as an ensign. This is no promise everyone will find it fun -- but it isn't hard to try.
