SCULPTURE OF PRIMITIVE MAN

Impressive in format and text is this fine review of the sculptures and art objects of primitive peoples from Africa, Oceania and the Northwest American coast. In the text, which Dr. Muensterberger wrote in collaboration with his wife, there is a clear definition of ""primitive"" and the meanings and changes in meaning through which the art of such people goes. With the aptness of social psychologists the Muensterbergers analyze such predominant elements as the collective character of all primitive activity, the lack of individualized style, the high values attributed to the objects etc.- clarifying the interrelation of causes and creating a solid background on which to base further inquiry. One of the most interesting points is the re-discovery of primitive art by modern painters and sculptors who saw in it a refreshing approach to pure form. The illustrations, 136 photogravure plates and 2 plates in color are by Hans Sibbelee and R. Spreng, are fully annotated in connection with the text. These photographs have been beautifully reproduced and their fine execution serves to make the book an art object in itself.
