Granny Rose and her hound, Henry, climb to a clifftop to admire the sun rising over Arkansas hills that are as comfortably plump as Granny Rose herself. Homeward bound, the two are caught in a blizzard; a convenient cave proves to be already occupied--by a very large, sleepy but restless bear. Undaunted, Granny quiets him by tucking his paw into his mouth before she and Henry continue on their way. In his first picture book, Ludwig combines the wit of a cartoonist's line--which he uses to delineate the cheerful old lady and her dog--with pleasing landscapes in pencil and watercolor. An unusual story that is sure to amuse the picture-book crowd; a promising debut.
