KIRKUS REVIEW

Subtitled, not too accurately, ""The Story of the British Merchant Marine"", this is actually a biography of the British Navy, its sailormen ""often undecorated, usually unchronicled"", with special tributes to the merchantmen, Based largely on official reports which are interlaced through the text, the major engagements of the war are covered, the long, uphill fight against the U boats, Marvik and Dunkirk, the Battle of the Atlantic, the Malta convoy, etc. Included also are individual incidents of ships and ships, who fought what and where, statistics on the growth of the fleet, on the supplies convoyed, on the toll of ships and men. For the record, but not for the average American reader.
