MOVING INTO MANHOOD

The former Director of Health Education for the A.M.A. (a St. Cat. regular) has written a sex text for younger boys. With a foreword by the ubiquitous Morris Fishbein, who finds it worthy, the book aims to answer the questions that boys on the verge of sexual maturity need the answers to -- about girls, erotic dreams, girls, masturbation, girls, how to behave etc.. The author's introduction promises that ""this is mainly about sex and we are not going to be coy or cute about it"". Dr. Bauer lives up to the second half of his promise. He is never coy or cute. But the ""mainly about sex"" is open to question. The ""Facts"" are disposed of quickly, unblushingly and firmly -- then it's off to the uses of tobacco, alcohol and the pitfalls of credit buying. These are very well done and would serve as good discussion points if the book were used with a group. The attitudes are wholesome and- as Fishbein's foreword has it, ""accepted"". Dr. Bauer's conversational, anecdotal style is easy to follow.
