This is subtitled ""An essay toward an autobiography of a race concept"". This would put off many who might be interested and moved by the very stirring story of the problem of the Negro race in terms of one man, himself a Negro, brought up in Massachusetts, who became a leader of his race, head of the N. A. for the Advancement of Colored People, and the editor of Crisis. His stand has been quite different from that of Booker T. Washington. He has fought for the right of Negroes to a cultural life of their own, and has reached the conclusion that it must be achieved through separation and self-supporting society, within a society -- an unpopular stand with many of his race. His philosophy and his own story make a moving record. Beautifully written.
