TEN YEARS IN THE CONGO

Ten years as mission doctor to thousands of natives scattered over a wide area should provide substance for a good story. Unfortunately, Davis seems to lack the ability to spin a yarn. It seems just another book on Africa. He divides his book into subject units, -- The Church in the Congo; Birth, Marriaee and Death; Witch Doctors and Congo Customers, etc. The emphasis is on the Congoese rather than on himself, so it lacks that ineffable personal touch. There are interesting bits, but the writing is colorless. The last part of the book gathers momentum (or perhaps one gets hardened?)
