A readable story with a situation which has its counterpart in many communities, the story of a man left with a growing family of young people to bring up, and the demoralization of the loss of the mother (in this case by divorce and remarriage) to offset. The situations have a certain poignancy, some humor, and good psychological base. The complications introduced by the oldest daughter's unfortunate infatuation for a man -- a bounder -- old enough to be her father, and the pending dangers of a mill strike in which the father is implicated produce motivation for a fast moving story. The denouement is perhaps a bit obvious, but the story, to that point, has distinct originality.
