Mrs. Fisher is the octogenarian president of World Education, Inc. Since 1906, when she first went to China as a missionary teacher, she has devoted her life to literacy, feminine education, and the civilizing influence of Christian religion. She did not marry until she was 44, and her husband, a Methodist bishop serving in India, was an admirable man whose activities and credo she shared fully. Long a widow at age 72, she returned to the sub-continent to set up a training school for Indian teachers, from which some 5,000 have already graduated and fill posts administered by the India Literacy Board she helped develop. She and her husband -- about whom she has also written a book -- were intimates of Gandhi, Nehru, Tagore, and other Indian notables. She has been close to the affairs of Asia for so many years that she can write with the easy familiarity of a native, yet has the keen, observing eye of a journalist. Her affection for the people she has served and her profound enjoyment of life glow warmly from the pages of her story.
