THE CRISIS OF CULTURAL CHANGE

The Episcopal Chaplain at M.I.T. undertakes here an examination of the present crisis in our changing culture, as seen from a Christian point of view. The chapters include: Order, Change, and Self-Identity; Christian Self-Identity Defined (as centering in Jesus Christ); Obstacles to Commitment; Imaginative Reception of Grace; Politics and Technology in Terms of Grace; Celebration of Life (Liturgical reform). The discussion shows the author to be conversant with much that is going on as cause or result in our changing culture. He draws, sometimes at length, from contemporary literature to illustrate his theme. His essential position, however, seems to be that of one who observes the present crisis while safely tethered to the affirmations and traditions of the church. Whether such a position can serve adequately for the criticism of our culture may be questioned.
