A grand Western, about a wagon train traveling to Oregon, by the author of Black River Captive. Jason Coit leaves his mother, sister and younger brother on their farm in Illinois to stake out a land claim in Oregon, where they will join him. He travels in Asa Strong's wagon trip where Strong loses his life through his bullheadness, and his wife soon goes home, leaving Jason with the wagon. Jason makes a place in the train, wins the respect and love of the pioneers by his fairness, gentleness and reliability. Jason's younger brother, Sammy a brash cocky boy who comes along despite orders to go home, is an example of the excellently motivated characterization when he matures as he travels. Lots of action, exceptional background reading for school and library use, as well as super stuff for boys who lean toward Westerns....This is the sort of ""bridging book"" we need, to lure youth from the dare devil comics. Try it!
