KIRKUS REVIEW

Auden's followers claim him as the outstanding poet of the decade; perhaps he is, if one can get past his difficult poetic manner. This latest volume is divided into three parts:- a long narrative poem interpreting today, since ""the situation of our time surrounds us like a baffling crime"". To this he brings his strong recognition of the political, philosophical and spiritual values of man which have been confused by war and poverty. The second part contains many notes, in prose and verse, on various parts of the text of the narrative poem -- sources, etc. The third part is a sonnet sequence.... In his admirers, you have a sure market.
