THE LITERARY LINE

The editor of Story meanders, in slightly humorous, informal vein, about various phases of the literary life he has known through years of contracts and experiences. Each chapter is a separate unit:- literary beginnings, a satire on a New York intellectual center, on humorists he has known and read, on the reading of writers of note, on hammock reading, on maiden efforts, on Story Magazine, on censorship, on the Colorado Writers' Conference, etc. Familiar, entertaining anecdotage about people in the literary limelight, Gannett, Bemelmans, Gunther, etc. etc. The attempt is mainly humorous, but most of it falls short, and in spite of his advocacy of the short story medium, he lacks the power of concentration himself. Pleasant, and on the whole, sound.
