STORY: The Fiction of the Forties by Whit & Hallie Burnett

STORY: The Fiction of the Forties

Email this review

As sub-titled, this is a reflection of contemporary writing at the literary, rather than popular, level sustained by Story magazine. Among the contributors who have achieved prominence-some of them had their initial introduction in Story- are Tennessee Williams, Norman Mailer, Truman Capote, Liam O'Flaherty, Faulkner and Caldwell, Prokosch, Jesse Stuart, William March, Langston Hughes, Dorothy McCleary- these the best known. The war of course gives an impetus to many of these stories, with sex a secondary theme. For the more serious follower of contemporary writing, rather than the more general audience of say the recent New Yorker short story collection.
