JOHNNY GETS OUT THE VOTE

By

Publisher: Aladdin

Second and third grade readers who loved: Johnny Wants to Be a Policeman are given a promotion in citizenship in a story pertinent to this election year. Johnny's father, despite his uneasiness on the platform, is running for the state legislature on the Democratic ticket. His over-enthusiastic son's efforts- abullient but credible- to get him nominated in the primaries, include rallying his pals to distribute handbills, taking a straw vote, evolving the idea of teaming up with a Negro candidate from the next precinct, and so on. Johnny deals realistically enough with problems of race, of false pretenses, and other issues, and in climax takes the stage himself with two speeches that roll them into the polls on primary day. Lots of vim in Sari's drawings.
