ALCOHOL

An historical, somewhat statistical, and non-individualistic approach to alcohol and the problem drinker which in its emphasis-at the close- does much to direct this chronic and prevailing condition toward high school educational programs. From the genesis of drinking in primitive societies, down to modern society when- by the 19th century- America had established a reputation as a hard-drinking people; the first temperance advocates and agencies; the 18th amendment and its inadequate enforcement- this the background. There follows the statistical analysis of alcohol consumption, how much and by whom- the money spent and the revenue intake; the attitudes toward drinking, its physiological effects and its psychological motivation. And finally the social control of drinking; the various rehabilitation methods; the obligation on the part of the schools and suggested units of study; and in the appendix, much material on available organizations and information, state programs, etc. For the individual in need of information, and for those dealing with this problem, a survey study.
