This differs from other books which are defined as ""practical guides to effective speaking"" because this author puts most of his emphasis on the tools of speaking,- words, how to use them. His sub-titles indicate the scope of the book:- Language; Melody in Speech; Memory; Preparation of a Speech; etc. She gives background data on the physiology of speech, suggesting specific corrective exercises to help tone, pitch, intonation, and so on. I felt- as I read- that it would be valuable as a follow up on person to person consultation, not as a self-help guide alone. In fact, the presumption throughout in that his audience has some sound basic equipment and understanding of words, grammar, construction, vocabulary building and other things of which he speaks. There is sound advice too on platform performance, debating, radio techniques, and suggestions about forming a speaking club. Home illustrative material is included, but the main value of the book lies in its power as a self-starter.
