LUTHER: LECTURES ON ROMANS (Vol. XV; the Library of Christian Classics)

Students of Martin Luther will be grateful for the new edition and translation of his class-room lectures on Romans at the University of Wittenberg. For a long time this material was known only through several copies of his student notes which were extant, and then a copy of the lectures was found in the Vatican Library, of all places. Finally in became known that the original was in the Royal Library in Berlin, from which Prof. Ficke was able to publish a provisional version of the lectures in 1908, his definitive edition to appear only in 1939. Dr. Pauck, with considerable editing and expounding of his own, now makes this series of lectures available to English speaking students. It is an extensive undertaking, and of maximum usefulness only to serious students of the subject, but it should be noted that there is to be found here, several years before the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, the sort of development of theological thinking in Luther a mind which would have led inevitably to his ""reform"" position whatever the outward circumstance might have been.
