The second volume in The Story of Civilization, of which Our Oriental Heritage, 1935, was the first. This, however, need not depend on the first as it is an entity, though for personal and public libraries, the series will sell itself. This continues the modern approach to history of the past, and keeps the same high quality of enthusiasm the first book showed. The period covered is from 3,500 B.C., to 146 B.C., and includes all known facts on Crete down to the coming of Roman invasion and conquest of Greek civilization. It all ties in with problems of today, and throws light on them through the Greek solutions of them. It makes vivid the importance of the great cities, the trial and error system in governmental fields, the influence of the outstanding men, the social and economic backgrounds, the cultural importance of Greek arts, the all encompassing heritage that has come down to present times, from the dispersion of Greek knowledge, through the Roman invasion, through the rest of the known world. A solid study of origins, growth, rise to peak, expansion, and fall, through civil and class and outside wars of what was the ""bright morning of Western civilization"" which provides historical interplay through Durant's thesis that ""civilization does not die, it migrates, changes habitat and dress and moves on.
