BIRTHSTONES

Probably originating as the twelve tribes of Israel, the precious stones discussed here became associated with the signs of the Zodiac for hundreds of years before they were adapted to the calendar year by the National Retail Jewelers' Association in 1912. This is a well-presented arrangement of information, with separate chapters for each stone preceded by more general units on criteria (durability, beauty, scarcity), monetary evaluations, distinctions between synthetic and imitation stones. Competent, but it lacks sparkle and it doesn't (attempt to) qualify as an introduction to gems. The sections on birthstones in Pearl's Wonders of Gems is not so expansive but it will serve in most cases.
