KIRKUS REVIEW

A difficult book to classify, this is at once the history of an archaeological riddle, a compendium of archaeological illuminations of Homeric epics, and an anecdotal biography of three pioneering archaeological scholars: Schliemann, Evans, and Blegen. In all three cases the treatment, as the author notes, is ""selective."" Whatever success is achieved in blending these subjects (and others) is due to the vigor of the subjects themselves, for William McDonald, Professor of Classics at the University of Minnesota, has written an over-explanatory, long-winded and loosely organized text that is quite tedious.
