GUIDE TO THE CHRISTIAN FAITH

It is high time that we had such a book as this which aims to describe as clearly and simply as possible the central Christian doctrines. The author has had in mind ""those who are at least partially attracted by Christianity, but who have some serious doubts as to what the Christian faith really stands for, and whether it is really relevant to daily living"". Acknowledging that most people shy away from ""doctrine"", the author asserts that what we believe is important, for ""belief determines action"". After a preliminary discussion of the purpose of theology, reason and faith and revelation, Dr. Spurrier discusses in turn the doctrines concerning Man, God, Christ, the Resurrection, the Atonement, the Christian interpretation of history and Salvation. The book is refreshing in that these great truths are set forth in language that any intelligent person can understand. The author is an Episcopalian, but the point of view expressed is that of the traditional evangelical faith held in common by most of the major Protestant denominations. Laymen who want to understand the distinction between the ""liberal"" viewpoint and the ""neo-orthodox"" will find this a fair minded exposition.
