TOM THUMB

Though the story is packed with lively incidents (and sure to bring a laugh when Tom escapes from his new owner by crying ""Set me down quick or I'll wet my pants!"") and the pictures are expressive enough due to the artist's exaggerated, cartoony way with eyeballs, Wiesner's toddler-like Tom has neither the jaunty elegance of Wilkinson's 1969 version (which the text more closely resembles) nor the homey charm of Hoffman's (KR, 1973, p. 311, J-91), and the hero's incongruous tininess is handled less imaginatively here than in either predecessor. An extra.
