COLLECTED POEMS

Lanterns on the Levee introduced many readers to William Alexander Percy and in that enchanting book, Percy says of his verse: ""they are more essentially myself than anything I did or said"". Spontaneous, intense, highly lyrical, but classic in form, his poetry is for the most part in the English romantic tradition. There are poems of love, of war, of place and person; there are poems of Grecian, medieval or religious inspiration; there is a long dramatic poem, a long narrative poem; but my choice falls on the lyrics which I thought finer, more sensitive. Today poetry is in greater demand than at any time since the last war; this is a varied collection, with a great deal that will appeal to conservative taste.
