KIRKUS REVIEW

A perfectly beautiful piece of bookmaking which includes 219 plates, in black and white and in color, to illustrate the story of jade. Whitlock, the former curator of the Morgan Gem Collection and the Drummond Jade Collection, was a great authority in the field. His presentation- at a popular level-combines the mineralogical interest as well as the aesthetic appeal of this stone, describes its qualities, sources, color range. And he goes back in time to the jade of ancient China, the Taoist symbols, the influence of Buddhism, and the many ways in which jade was used- bowls and cups and vases, beads and buckles and adornments, etc. etc. A special treat for a special market.
